Liquid treasure, wood people and the mile swim.

Today we discovered a liquid treasure. A food that is healthy AND enjoyable for my children. Smoothie, where have you been all of my life???

I have to tell you that I held out on making these for my kids for two reasons: I didn't think they'd like it AND I thought they were rather high-maintenance to make. Neither are true. You throw some fruit and yogurt in a blender and wa-la. Perfection.

I'm beginning to think that if you puree just about anything with a generous heaping of yogurt, it is kid friendly. Wondering how well this theory would hold up with salmon.

We mixed some frozen peaches and berries, orange juice, raspberry yogurt and a banana. Anyone have some unusual/unconventional ingredients that make a killer smoothie? Salmon?

This afternoon, G had a fun friend over for an impromptu playdate, which included a golf lesson, the creation of wood people, push-pop eating and swimming a mile. Yes, a mile. More on that tomorrow. For now, the wood people.

A few different sizes of wood beads (purchased at my beloved Hobby Lobby) and a glue gun give you the basic shape.

Yarn becomes the hair and permanent markers work well for the face. Someone put some clothes on this lady, because she is a tad bit inappropriate.

Our gang of princesses. Today we just had time to make our little people, but I think this would be a great idea for story writing...creating a plot and then making the characters to act it out. Just a thought....

We are big smoothie fans at our house. I always freeze my bananas. They make a nice smooth consistency. We like fruit, but we also love peanut butter banana. Sometimes with just a like hit of cocoa powder for added fun. Protein powder (i get mind at trader joe's the vanilla favor) gives it some substance and a nice Smoothie King taste. They are oh so good. Love the little people.

i add protein powder and "very green" from Trader Joes. it adds a bunch of hidden veggie goodness.

i have been wanting to make some little people but wondering where to get the already-made-shape. Now i see i can make my own.

thanks (once again) sara!

We LOVE smoothies! I agree with Melanie about the frozen bananas. They make a world of difference and I avoid making smoothies without them. We are also fans of the vanilla protein powder. YUMMMM! Oh, the woooden people are adorable! I may have to venture into HL for the supplies.

Melanie and her family are on the same page as we are! PB and a little bit of cocoa powder make it almost seem like a milkshake! You can also pour smoothies into popsicles to freeze and eat later!

I have a great ingredient for you...spinach leaves! Seriously, try it! You can not taste the spinach at all and it adds so much nutrients. Just throw some leaves in there. I add about a cup and you still can't taste it! Sometimes it makes it a little green though :). When Marlie is on a food strike I whip her up a spinach smoothie and she loves it! You can keep a bag of spinach leaves in the freezer so it won't go bad in the fridge.
